You will have seen from national TV, e-mails from the supermarkets’ Chief Executives and local sources that all the big supermarkets are now providing priority shopping hours for seniors and NHS personnel. The times vary from supermarket to supermarket and the situation changes almost on a daily basis. Rather than attempt to track these here, please use an excellent local information source the Crowborough life website.
In case you’ve encountered this in your local supermarket here are some that are offering priority shopping periods for seniors.
There’s a lot of information on the coronavirus and assistance available on national websites. With the majority of our members in the Crowborough area, we’re going to use the club website as a noticeboard for news items and community information which may be of interest whilst we all cope with self-isolation and other government advice/instruction.

Owing to the continuing concern relating to the spread of the coronavirus, it has been decided to postpone the forthcoming President’s lunch on March
30th and reschedule this event to Monday 10th August.
The decision to postpone this function is based on the uncertainty of how this viral infection will spread over the next few weeks and months and as the age profile of our club is in the higher risk category, as defined by the government, it does not seem wise to proceed and place us all at risk, as the virus is obviously very contagious and still in the early stages of its life.
Our regular visit to Tunbridge Wells for the Tunbridge Wells Operatic and Dramatic Society’s Spring show The Wizard of Oz. is scheduled for Wednesday 13th May 2020.
On Wednesday 26th February twenty members of Ashdown Probus Club and their Partners enjoyed a guided visit to London’s Imperial War Museum.
It’s a long way ahead but, due to other commitments at the Golf Club, we have been asked to alter two of our luncheon dates later this year.
Accordingly, please note that the July and October lunches have now been rescheduled for the first Monday in each month.
Please therefore amend your diaries as below…
July luncheon: Monday 6th July 2020
October luncheon: Monday 5th October 2020
I am delighted to report that one of our members, Stan Loosley, has been appointed to the rank of ‘Chevalier in the Ordre National de la Légion d’Honneur’. This is awarded by the President of the Republic of France, and is an extremely prestigious award.
The citation from the French Embassy in London reads:
“I offer you my warmest congratulations for this high honour, which recognises your military engagement and steadfast involvement in the liberation of France during the Second World War” It goes on to say “We must never forget heroes like you”.
I know that we all offer Stan our warmest congratulations on this singular honour. We are proud to have him among us as a member of the Club.

We have, I believe, been coming for many years to Barnsgate Manor for our Christmas lunch. We have always been looked after with care and with a very professional approach. This year was no exception.
On Friday 6th December no fewer than 85 members, their partners and guests beat the atrocious December weather to enjoy an excellent festive lunch together. Choices ranged from the traditional “turkey with all the trimmings” (the first of many, no doubt!) to the ever-popular lamb shank; all followed, of course, by Christmas pudding or, for those who dared, tiramisu.
Events like our Christmas lunch do not of course just happen. A huge amount of work goes into the organisation of the event, and this year the vast majority of that work fell on the shoulders of one man – Paul Black. Our huge thanks to Paul, and his assistant Nick Bunston, for all the effort, patience and organisation they put into making this such an excellent celebration for the Club. What better introduction could we have to the festive season!
You can find more photographs of the event in the website Gallery.
I wish you all a happy Christmas and a peaceful but prosperous New Year!
Andrew Fermor,
President
