The Friday walking group

On Friday 5th July the Friday Walking Group decided to take full advantage of the lovely weather and headed for the hills – the South Downs to be precise. A hot day had been promised, but the cloud cover and a light breeze, especially higher up, made it a perfect day for walking.

A long but fairly gentle climb from Alfriston village up towards the Long Man was rewarded by stunning views westwards across the Cuckmere Valley, south to the sea and northwards to the Weald. It was one of those days where you could see for ever – and no sounds save those of the skylarks above and the perspiring walkers below.

The circular walk was just under five miles, and ended at the Sussex Ox at Milton Street – the Long Man Best bitter, the cod and chips and the liver with bubble and squeak especially to be recommended.

The walkers were John Bennett, John Cozens, Andrew Fermor, Roger Hopson, Duncan Rawson Mackenzie, Phil Watson and Ken Young.
