Stan Loosley

By 17/04/2020Members Only

Stan passed away on Monday 13th April at Pembury Hospital.

Stan was a recent member joining Ashdown Probus Club in 2017, when we moved the monthly lunch to the Crowborough Golf Club. Stan was a past Captain of the Golf Club. Stan had an honour bestowed upon only a handful of members in that he was an honorary member of the club. He will be fondly remembered by the Past Captains and club members.

We were advised that Stan had passed away his daughter Sara and his wife, Pam wrote:

“Stan was taken into Pembury Hospital in very poor condition last Thursday, despite being given oxygen unfortunately he couldn’t be saved and died in hospital. Actual cause of death has, as yet, not been disclosed (he was not tested for Covid-19) but as we all know Stan had been in poor health for some time and the last few months had been very difficult for him.”

Recently Stan had been appointed to the rank of ‘Chevalier in the Ordre National de la Légion d’Honneur’. (reported on this website in December accompanied by this photograph). This is awarded by the President of the Republic of France, and is an extremely prestigious award. The citation from the French Embassy in London reads: “I offer you my warmest congratulations for this high honour, which recognises your military engagement and steadfast involvement in the liberation of France during the Second World War” It goes on to say  “We must never forget heroes like you”.

He will be greatly missed by family and his many friends, but in the true spirit of an ‘old mariner’ he went down fighting.

Details of his funeral are not available at present but due to the current situation I believe the sad thing is we won’t get to say farewell.
