DESCRIPTION:Coming up to Christmas\, Groombridge Amateur Dramatic Society is presenting Alan Ayckbourn’s Absurd Person Singular\, Wednesday 10th to Saturday 13th December 2025\, each evening at 7.30 p.m. The venue is Groombridge Village Hall\, TN3 9QX. \n\n\n\nAfter his superb performance in the GADS production of The Vicar of Dibley last year\, this play features Probus member Roger Benison once again in a leading role. \n\n\n\n​The play: Meet three couples in their three kitchens on Christmas Eves of three successive years. ​Set against the familiar behind-the-scenes chaos of Christmas parties\, this dark comedy follows the “lower class” but up-and-coming Hopcrofts\, the philandering architect and his unstable wife and the well-to-do bank manager and his tippling wife. \n\n\n\n​The play shifts from farce to unsettling satire as the characters navigate ambition\, class tensions\, and marital dysfunction. DESCRIPTION:‘Tis the season to be jolly and of course a Christmas lunch is a great time to meet up with friends to celebrate the festive period and catch up on old times. In 2025 once again Ashdown Probus Club are holding their Christmas Lunch at Crowborough Beacon Golf Club at 12:00 for 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday 3rd December 2025. Last year the ambience inside the Clubhouse provided a lovely setting for this event. Here’s hoping for a similarly successful event this year. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPhotos of last year’s event \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe cost is £47.00 per person for a three course Christmas lunch with wine on the table. His talk on Maritime Pilotage is an insight into the highly specialised little know profession of maritime pilotage. Pilots navigate ships of all shapes and sizes into and out of ports globally. SUMMARY:September 2025: Newhaven Household waste reclycling
DESCRIPTION:15 Ashdown Probus Club members and partners recently visited the Newhaven household waste energy recovery facility operated by Veoli. \n\n\n\n\nAfter the display of a video film\, describing the facility and operations\, visitors\, suitably attired and wearing headphones\, were ushered around the facility with opportunities to ask questions. They saw the transport bay\, where articulated trucks\, bin lorries and other vehicles discharge waste before being loaded into the incinerators\, the heat from which could be felt by those present. After being escorted through the works\, they arrived at the control area\, which monitors the facility’s operations. The plant\, which cost £175m. and\, entering into use in 2012\, has a useful life of over 30 years\, which is capable of extension. It employs 38 people around the clock. \n\n\n\n\nIt operates similarly to a traditional power station. The incinerators convert household waste from the South Downs area\, otherwise destined for landfill and unsuitable for recycling\, into electricity supplied to the National Grid. Furnaces running at a minimum of 850 degrees centigrade generate steam to drive the turbines to create the electricity. The addition of oxygen reduces the carbon content of the resulting ash\, which is sold commercially. Gases discharged during the burning and discharged through chimneys are monitored.

They were inspired by outstanding designers such as Sir Sydney Camm\, scientists such as Alan Turing\, and industrial visionaries such as Andrew Jackson Higgin. DESCRIPTION:CANCELLED \n\n\n\nDavid and Susan Homewood have once again offered their beautiful garden in which to hold the Ashdown Probus Annual Summer Picnic on TUESDAY 26th August 2025 from 12.00 noon. Save the date!Their garden at Birchden is surrounded by flowering and scented plants\, which are abuzz with bees and butterflies and a haven for small birds; the ambience is very special and enjoyable. Some aspects of the garden have a natural habitat\, which contrast very well with the more traditional aspects of an English country garden.David and Susan will provide tables\, chairs and table cloths\, so there is no need to bring them unless you want to sit separately with particular friends. An urn of hot water will also be provided together with tea bags\, coffee granules\, milk and sugar so that everyone can help themselves. For the rest\, this is a ‘bring your own’ picnic along with your own favourite ‘tipple’ (alcoholic/non alcoholic)\, cutlery and crockery\, glasses and mugs\, and a cushion (the seats are hardish plastic).There is no charge for attendance at this event. We are purely using their garden to enjoy a country summer afternoon shared with and in the company of good friends. There will also be croquet to play\, and petanque. If you have any other outside\, non-energetic lawn games\, such as garden bowls or Jenga then please bring them along and we will organise friendly fun games. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCroquet players resting after a game \n\n\n\nPlease plan to arrive from 12:00 noon and you will find there is ample car parking in the bottom field. The car park and drop-off and disabled parking will be sign-posted. The dress code is smart casual. There is a downstairs toilet but it is not particularly easy for anyone who is wheelchair-bound. There is a wheelchair available if anyone needs one and everyone is free to go wherever they please in the garden but need to be aware that the ground is very uneven.David suggests that members can simply let him know if they are coming so that he has some idea how many table places and chairs to put out. SUMMARY:August 2025: Ashdown Probus Golf Society - Summer event
DESCRIPTION:The summer outing for Ashdown Probus Golf Society saw us return to Marriott’s Tudor Park near Bearsted. It was a venue that we’d been to before but not for a number of years. In contrast to last year\, when we were rained off on the second day\, the weather this time was ideal  – fine\, sunny and not too hot. With the recent lack of rain\, the course was very dry\, which meant that the balls ran a long way\, though with all the slopes on the course not necessarily in the desired direction.  We had sixteen players this year\, and we managed to play for the two trophies. The Ladies Salver was won this year by Eunice Hutchinson\, with Irene Toyne coming in second. In the Men’s competition Peter Billcliff took the honours in The Jeff Hughes Cup. Brian Hughes was runner-up – for the second year in a row! \n\n\n\nPresident Tom Hutchinson with winners Peter Billcliff\, Eunice Hutchinson and runner-up Brian Hughes\n\n\n\nIn the coming months we hope to book dates and venues for 2026. As usual\, we will have one event in the Spring and one later in the year\, probably in August. The focus of the events is very much on fun golf and golfers of all abilities are welcome\, so please keep an eye on the website for details. \n\n\n\nTom HutchinsonPresident Golf Society
