SUMMARY:March 2025: President's lunch
DESCRIPTION:The Hydro Hotel\, Eastbourne\n\n\n\nThe venue for the 2025 President’s lunch on Wednesday 26th March was\, once again\, the Hydro Hotel\, in Eastbourne. Over recent years Ashdown Probus Club has held their President’s lunch many times at the Hydro and every time the hospitality and service has been excellent. \n\n\n\nThis was our opportunity\, as members of Ashdown Probus Club\, to thank Phil Watson\, our 2024-25 President\, for his contribution and excellent stewardship of the Club over the past year\, and also welcoming the incoming President\, Paul Black. \n\n\n\nUpon arrival there were pre-lunch drinks\, enabling members and their partners/guests to circulate and catch up with old friends. We occupied the Garden room\, which provided a superb view of the English Channel. After weeks of unsettled weather\, the sun decided to shine creating a warm early Spring day and many members were pleased to sit in the sunshine enjoying the vista of the English Channel. \n\n\n\nThe hotel offered an exceptional menu choice which satisfied everyone’s culinary and dietary requirements. The meals were delicious and being accompanied by ‘wine on the table’ a good time was had by all. Conversations flowed across the tables in a relaxed and comfortable environment. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrior to the meal\, the President circulated a team quiz to be completed over lunch. A number of teams tied for first place and after a ‘tie-breaker’ question\, it is pleasing to report the the winning team was Lynn Watson\, Tom & Eunice Hutchinson\, Brian & Levitha Hughes and Paul & Shelagh Black. \n\n\n\nFollowing the lunch\, Phil Watson\, the President\, gave a summation of his year\, who was followed by Paul Black\, the Vice President\, who discussed the up coming opportunities for Ashdown Probus Club. \n\n\n\nThe President was presented with a very nice bottle of wine to thank him for his direction and guidance of Ashdown Probus Club. His wife\, Lynn\, was presented with a very nice bouquet of flowers\, as an appreciation of her support to her husband during his very successful Presidential year.

SUMMARY:Groombridge Amateur Dramatic Society
DESCRIPTION:Home\, I’m Darling – a play by Laura Wade\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvery marriage needs a little fantasy to keep it sparkling. But behind the gingham curtains\, being a domestic goddess isn’t as easy as it looks… \n\n\n\nThis Spring\, Groombridge Amateur Dramatic Society presents Laura Wade’s brilliant “Home\, I’m Darling“\, a dark comedy about sex\, cake and the quest to be the perfect 1950s housewife. It is a sharp\, funny and strikingly perceptive play. \n\n\n\nThrough the seemingly idyllic marriage of Johnny and Judy\, the play explores what women might want and how they might successfully achieve it. \n\n\n\nThe play is being performed at Groombridge Village Hall\, Station Road\, Groombridge\, TN3 9QX between Wednesday 19th and Saturday 22nd March 2025 – midweek evening performances commence at 7.45 p.m. (the bar opens at 7.00 p.m.). Probus are hoping to have a group attend the Friday evening performance but if you can’t make that day we’re sure GADS would love to see on on one of the other evenings. Please also note the special Saturday Supper night at 7.00 p.m. for 7.30 p.m. (see website https://www.groombridgetheatre.co.uk for details). \n\n\n\nClick here to download the event flyer. \n\n\n\nFor this outing we will make our own way to the Groombridge Village Hall performance of “Home I’m Darling” on the day of our choice. If you don’t have transport\, other members may be able to offer lifts. Please contact Roger Benison if you would like a lift or can offer a seat to someone else. \n\n\n\nTickets are available from https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/groombridgetheatre \n\n\n\n\n\nor\n\n\n\n£ 25.00 Saturday Supper night – full details from https://www.groombridgetheatre.co.uk or The Shop on the Corner Groombridge

SUMMARY:March 2025: Drapers' Hall and lunch in a City pub
DESCRIPTION:The Grand Livery Hall\n\n\n\nThe group\n\n\n\nDrapers Coat of Arms\n\n\n\n\nThe Drapers’ Company is one of the historic Great Twelve Livery Companies in the City of London and was founded as an informal association of drapers (woolen textile traders) as early as 1180. The Drapers’ Company are third in the order of precedence of the City Livery Companies\, and was incorporated as a company under a Royal Charter in 1438 being the first corporate body to be granted a coat of arms (above). The charter gave the company perpetual succession and a common seal. \n\n\n\nThe Drapers’ Livery Company has long since extended its membership from drapers to people of all trades and still central to the Company is the belief that being a strong and friendly community better to be able to help others. Today\, the company operates as a charitable\, ceremonial and educational institution. \n\n\n\nDrapers’ Hall is located in Throgmorton Avenue in the City of London. Although the first Drapers Hall was in St. Swithins Lane\, following the execution of Thomas Cromwell in 1540 and the forfeiture of his home and garden to King Henry VIII\, the Drapers Company purchased it from the King for the sum of the equivalent of £1\,200. \n\n\n\nThis outing was the seventh in a series of visits to London’s Livery Companies and proved\, once again\, to be a most enjoyable and informative experience for the twenty members and guests who attended. We were all enthralled by the Jonathan Yeo portrait of King Charles (below) commissioned by the Drapers’ Company and now having pride of place in the Court Room. \n\n\n\n\nThe Safe room\n\n\n\nKing Charles portrait 2024\n\n\n\nLunch at the George & Vulture\n\n\n\n\nThe tour of the Hall\, which has been rebuilt twice following fires\, was conducted by a Liveryman (a lady in this case) Penny\, who is also the Company Archivist. The group enjoyed visiting the four major halls\, not least the Grand Livery Hall built in 1772 and upgraded to its current magnificent proportions in the 1860s. Penny gave us a fascinating account of both the history of the building and contents as well as the philanthropic and charity objectives of the Company which include the distribution of approximately £3\,000\,000 annually to various organisations and educational establishments. The visit concluded with a visit to the “safe room” (above) which houses an astonishing collection of gold and silver artifacts. \n\n\n\nFollowing the tour\, the group repaired to a nearby hostelry\, the George and Vulture where a welcome drink and enjoyable lunch awaited. \n\n\n\nThanks must go to Phil Parker for the excellent organisation and arrangements. \n\n\n\nPeter Billcliff09/03/25
